At the time, anything was better to watch than WWE, even fucking GCW. That’s why all those other indy promotions got some spotlight and AEW was created. While there was some good spots in the start of AEW’s lifespan (Cody’s early booking, storylines, interesting concepts, Tony generally staying out of the spotlight), there was still some areas that showed the sloppiness and indieriffic nature that AEW would continue to show (and show more and more as the years progressed). So at the time, in 2019, WWE was complete shit and AEW was better (both compared to now and compared to WWE at the time) but not really good.
