It won't be a disaster but they're going to hurt themselves so they can keep being marks for Roman when he isn't even the top draw to justify having the title.

the company ultimately wouldn't suffer too hard but a lot of the goodwill built up from the past few years would disappear. giving cody two rumbles in a row, seeming to take it away, then giving it back just to sacrifice him at roman's altar again?

it would also beg the question of who the next big challenger is. rocky is the obvious answer but I feel like if cody loses it would be from rock interference

They have firmly established Cody to be the guy to take the title from him. Maybe not at WM40 but eventually but they also can't keep kicking the can down the road. Especially in this day and age where there are shit loads of things to get into, if wrestling keeps letting fans down they will just move on to play more vidya or stream some shows.

People don't realize how fucked WWE would be if they screwed Cody again. A large percentage of the live audiences came back due to his run and a large percent of goodwill is based around WWE willing to do what the fans want and also push people up the card. It would be disastrous.

Last year only made him more over but I don't think lightning can strike twice, especially with the awkward post-Rumble stuff. Even if the entire roster run out to screw Cody it will backfire with some of the fans.

Unironically I think it would look better for posterity if Cody lost. It would make the concept of fishing the story and winning the title historic. Cody himself would be remembered as the mega star who was on top of two companies but won neither of their belts. It's the perfect way to redeem the face-of-the-company spot after what Super Cena and Big Dog did.
