What drew people to wrestling when it was a carney act was the fact wrestlers played up the larger than life kayfabe personalities and it made people wanna watch them beat the shit out of each other.
You can't remove that from wrestling, especially now that kayfabe's dead and people know it's fake. Otherwise you just have a series of spots in the ring which can be technically impressive but only to wrestling autists that care about that stuff. Majority of people don't, and even amongst wrestling fans the majority don't care about that.
And it doesn't need to be a super complex novela or anything. I don't pay attention to AEW but if all these lucha guys are coming in due to a recent collab or something, why not announce that, then have one episode of Dynamite dedicated to a few dark matches and talking about lucha history, and in that introduce guys like Atlantis and talk about Jericho's past down in Mexico and THEN set the big matches for the week after? No major storyline needed just a bit of fucking build up.
