Pro-Wrestling and MMA are associated with the same demographic and seen as "white trash". Talk to the average boomer and they will talk about how barbaric cage fighting is similar to how pro-wrestling was perceived in the 90s. I think pro-wrestling manages to thrive still based off star power because of guys whose careers depend on hyping up a crowd. You look at the average top star in the UFC and they have no idea how to speak to an audience or maintain a good public image. They use 9/11 jokes or try too hard to be witty that it ends up being cringey.

Considering that wrestling's ratings keep decreasing year after year is proof that wrestling has slowly been dying for the past two decades. MMA had a hot run in that mid-late 2000s to early 2010s period, but it's cooled off a lot since then. The only thing keeping WWE and AEW relevant is their mainstream network availability. If Raw, Smackdown, Dynamite, etc weren't on TV, wrestling will just be some underground/indie bullshit that a few thousand people enjoy.

The only good big MMA fight ever is Inoki vs. Ali because it's actually two different martial arts being used and you get to see what happens and how they try to navigate the fight. Now everything is homogenized and under a ruleset that makes it not like a real fight plus you have no stars and just wrestling and boxing cosplay so you get MMGay

If it didn't happen when McGregor was top guy, then it never will. There's always gonna be a contigent of kids and neckbeards like us who refuse to let go. Pro wrestling can still do well if naturally entertaining personalities are at work, but those personalities would succeed in other avenues regardless.

promotions need to step up their game with storylines rn, people give Russo lots of shit but at least there was always stuff happening, I think that's a part of the appeal of pro wrestling, you get the theatrics and violence (which are more over the top than MMA) and you also get crazy storylines and shit. No one in MMA is going to pretend to be a big red masked monstrous beast or some roided out alien man from parts unknown, it's not just the fights that keep us invested but the theatrical elements, the stories being told.

Pro wrestling has been a pop culture staple since Gorgeous George, and when it's hot, everyone wants to be a part of it. Most all the other athletes respected wrestlers, because they knew the regiment was tough. Its sportswriters who are whiners about wrestling, but cry real tears to sniff Lebron's jock.
