games are not the same as a play or a book
Super Mario Bros is a good and fun game, but Super Mario Odyssey is objectively better to play, especially in 2024, especially if you understand the evolution and the history of how the game changed over time
this isn't true for a play or a book, because it's not the same form of entertainment
hundreds of years can go by and a story is still told exactly the same way because it's text
it's only been a few decades and most video games have completely changed in a massive way
just compare Dark Souls to Elden Ring and what it asks of the player, despite being a very similar game with the same controls and very similar gameplay
there's an evolution of the expectations that are placed on the player
in FF7, you had to choose attacks or magic or defend or choose which row you were in for each party member in coordination with each other to exploit enemy weaknesses based on a timer that gives you a turn
but in FF7R, you have to attack and defend and move around the battlefield and issue commands in real time, all the while switching between all 3 characters all doing the same thing in coordination with each other to exploit enemy weaknesses
while it's very similar, the experience has evolved into a more engaging and actively controlled one
something like this cannot happen in a static/non interactive form of entertainment and therefore using them for a game argument does not hold water because they are innately un-interactive art forms.
