Though I seriously doubt the cagematch crowd has seen a lot of Lou thesz matches. I’m an actual wrestling expert and I’ve seen maybe 5.

They haven’t. They’re just regurgitating what they heard from wrestling historians to feel smart and credible. Anyone who’s actually gone back and watched guys like Lou Thesz or Bruno would know they would get eaten alive in pro wrestling from the Hogan era onwards.
