Kenny can be forced to chill out and work a great match if he is being led by someone that gets it (the prime example is his match with Danielson), but he can't do it by himself.
Kenny Omega is the smark version of The Ultimate Warrior: can only work a good match if he's carried BUT the crowds at the time were excited by their athleticism and passion. It's just that crowds have changed, and smarks have been convinced by Dave Meltzer (their Emperor) that workrate is all that matters, even without any understanding of psychology (the WHEN and the WHY of working a match).
tl;dr - if your work lacks the semblance of legitimacy, then it's just a cooperative tumbling routine. It's not wrestling.
