He wasn't a cool heel, at least not when his act was at its hottest. He was a chickenshit who constantly got embarrassed by the faces. He was a loser who saw CM Punk as an absentee father figure. Wardlow squashed him in 5 minutes. When he cut that worked shoot promo on Tony I'm sure he thought he was the coolest guy in the world, but that's not why people initially liked his act.

Because when turning babyface he inorganically turned his character into something that he didn't get over for. Common mistake. Often the best way to turn someone face is to keep everything exactly the way as when they were a heel except having him wrestle heels instead of babyfaces. Countless examples in history, look at Austin, Rock, Shawn, Luger, Eddie etc. Roman will eventually turn face in the same way. He will still have the Tribal Chief gimmick and be an asshole but people will love him because he got turned on/is wrestling heels.
