Will I like New Japan if I hate AEW? What I dislike about AEW is primarily the storylines and the constant winking at backstage nonsense for smarks. I also despise Orange Cassidy and I think it's disgraceful anyone puts him on TV.

I know that stories aren't the primary focus. That's why I'm interested. If AEW had no stories it would be much better.

You may enjoy the presentation more, as the production is a lot better and the product is treated with more seriousness. They train their wrestlers to have good fundamentals before they get to do complicated stuff which is a nice change of pace from modern US TV. But 2024 NJPW isn't super exciting. NJPW in previous decades was awesome, even the batshit 2000s era when they had MMA guys coming in was interesting. Right now they're just weathering a Japanese economic recession while talent leaves to get comfy US TV deals. I don't find most of their next generation of stars interesting yet. Hopefully they'll find their footing because they all have potential.

How would you know what any of this is unless you follow backstage stuff yourself like a smark? You probably wouldn't enjoy NJPW because it sounds like you aren't a fan of wrestling, and are only a fan of backstage drama and shitting on things, in which case just listen to Cornette and stop tuning in to any wrestling shows.

You might like it, New Japan has a better presentation and some good stories. But don't go watch a New Japan show expecting some super indy bangerinos because that's not what they do. New Japan is mainly a story/character focused promotion, not in the american wrestling soap opera way but as an example right now you have a faction of cheating heels called House Of Torture and they make the bangerino nerds seethe because they don't wrestle for Dave Meltzer star ratings.
