Metacritic merely reflects the views of journalists who can't even get past a fucking tutorial. Parasite Eve 2 is way more legendary than any modern game but it was made during a time when any vaguely survival horror game was called a Resident Evil clone when it's not a RE clone at all. In RE games you're supposed to run away like a bitch. In PE2, you're penalized for running away and rewards you for killing everything.
It's similar to how every boomer shooter was called a Doom clone. Boomer shooter is also a terrible name since none of them were made by boomers, they were made by Gen X & older Millennials. Most of them weren't Doom copycats, and a lot of them played way better than Doom. It's just back then, genres didn't exist outside of established ones from the arcades.
