What the fuck is going on? Why are so many companies doing so well? Just last year WWE was dominating the indies and all of a sudden the indies get a boost in attendance and relevance despite WWE selling out. What changed?

Honestly and without meaning to start shit, it's because AEW is failing. They basically monopolized indie wrestling for a couple of years and made it the only real viable alternative to WWE for fans and talent. Indies were buzzing throughout the mid 10s before AEW came along, and now that interest in it is dying down, it's leaving room for some of that buzz to come back.

I know people meme on the idea of wrestling being 'hot', because it doesn't have the same cultural capital it used to, but that's an argument made by morons. No individual piece of media has that same impact that wrestling used to, because the world is different. Sure, a new streaming show will capture the zeitgeist, but it lasts a couple of weeks and then is swiftly forgotten (Tiger King, Squid Game, the list goes on). Wrestling will never be 'mainstream' again, but it's genuinely hotter than it's been for a decade at least.

this is headcanon. no one else is putting out an interesting product, either. they're all bland. there aren't any standout workers or charismatic people on the indie scene like there were pre-aew. gcw is the only american indie with a following because they tour nationally and they have way less buzz than they did prior to bungling the shitty hammerstein ppv over 2 years ago
years ago you had a rabid base of hardcore fans that would watch everything that made tape. these days no one's watching shit like defy or west coast pro. none of the indies are picking up the slack from aew. it's not coming back.

Wrong. Wrestling's greatest ever period was during the Monday night wars between WCW and WWF. There was also a decent indie scene at that time, see ECW. The problem is that AEW never really hit the big leagues like they'd planned. I really hoped and actually believed for a while that they might provide real competition for WWE and usher in a new boom period but in reality they never made a dent, they didn't become the next WCW or even really TNA. They just became the main stop for indie talent and indie fans.

I still believe we could get another company like that. I don't know what it would take for that to happen but it could. As long as that company genuinely reaches WWE levels it would still leave room for the indies.

The problem is WWE is at a much higher level than they were back during the Monday Night Wars. It's simply impossible for a new company to gain anything close to the market dominance that WWE currently has. It would require WWE to make some seriously fucking stupid business decisions for any new company to even approach them.

You could see this during the early days of AEW. The only reason AEW looked like it might get close to WWE in terms of ratings was because WWE was so dogshit in 2019-2021. As soon as WWE's product improved, the consumers went back to the brand they grew up with.

They don't do weekly TV.
They do weekly youtube.
We're at the point where the brand recognition dimes predominately come from the internet presence of these shows.
You can see NWA on youtube, which means its way more accessible than the WWE which doesn't even upload full episodes to youtube.
They got 150k viewers per episode of Powerrr in the first 24 hours in 2019 purely by being available for free, and being different from the WWE.
And because that's spreading awareness of the brand, more people will want to see the show for themselves.
If your product is good enough, they'll buy tickets to see it live.
That's the future for the indies. WWE is halfway going to do the same, since they're moving to Netflix which already has millions of subscribers who basically get this added "for free". Until they shove ads into the show and everyone's predictably disappointed.

False. The greatest period was the Golden Era, which made wrestling popular and accepted in the mainstream to the point that wrestling from that period (84-92) is part of pop culture and nostalgia for everyone that lives through it, not just the hardcore wrestling fans.

Attitude Era was a revitalization of the above, but with '90s sensibilities. But it caused lasting damage due to overexposure of big stars on weekly TV, and ramping up the violence and sexual content on weekly TV. In short, cheap pops and this couldn't last. When the industry weakened, weekly TV couldn't go back to the old standard that had worked for decades to build heat and protect stars until the big events. It lessened the appeal of house shows too because you could see similar or better matches on weekly TV. Expectations changed and nobody, not even WWE, could meet them anymore since they didn't have the generational stars to draw anymore.

A show sold on the retirement of Sting, arguably the biggest wrestler to ever wrestle at AEW other than CM Punk, should ideally sell more tickets than Monday Night Raw.

Ebb & flow of the business. If there's general interest in mainstream wrestling, the smaller companies also do pretty good. If the mainstream shows like Raw or Smackdown (or even Dynamite) put out garbage, then obviously people will be turned off by anything else.
