It's been like that forever. They released Jeff Hardy at the peak of his popularity and years later you would see marks on TV getting asked who their favourite wrestler in WWE was and they would say Jeff Hardy and have no idea that he was in TNA. I know lifelong wrestling marks who go to indy shows and don't even know what aew is. They know that it exists but it's"that weird other one".

Nah, more like WWE has the capability to make anyone a star, so the relative value of all wrestlers is similar. Other, lower quality promotions are incapable of making stars and have to resort to spending 8 figures on people that other feds have cast off.
