It was originally used by the Kliq after they saw Turkish nationalists using the hand sign (known as Bozkurt işareti in Turkish) when they were touring in Germany so they started using it back. Scott Hall thought it was cool so he convinced the rest of the kliq to use it as their thing.

On top of this it's also a surprisingly big driving force of Japanese tourism, since Conan's crew goes all over the country to every shanty town and prefecture there is and people wanna see stuff from it. It's absurd to think of how little time has passed in canon though, it's not a reset-show like The Simpsons, supposedly it actually is going somewhere.

For a while at least, it is a well written show and if you like figuring out mysteries in your head ala Scooby-Doo it scratches that itch. Not all the way through though, no man is strong enough for that, just stick to the bi-yearly movies.

You don't have to watch all the episodes, which are more filler than manga arcs. Hell, you don't have to watch all the manga arcs, just the ones that have character developments and the ones related to the Black Organization and the FBI. Also, the movies are great.
