They must've thought they were doing something wrong or not using quite enough force even though this should've told them something was wrong. This is the difference between the AEW incident and this one. This is entirely accidental and was SUPPOSED to be safe. Only later on do we find out these guys were putting themselves through absolute hell JUST to entertain the fans and get the spot right.
Compare that to Perry explicitly using glass just to sate his ego and mock Punk. There's no entertainment in it, no thought, no care, just crude masochism.
