I agree with you to a certain extent
If Cody was around during the late Attitude era/early Ruthless Aggression era, no way would I ever root for him to win the WWE title
But the problem is that WWE's top wrestlers have been so generally dimeless in recent years that someone like Cody can easily stand out as a top star among them
No one on the current roster who started in WWE during or after the PG era, is leagues above Cody in terms of top star potential. Some might mog him a bit in specific areas such as mic work, ring work, "the look", maybe slightly-louder crowd reactions, etc. but none are so much better as to say "....fucking REALLY?! They're choosing CAWdy to main event WM instead of (insert wrestler here)?!"
Another problem is that in recent years WWE has normalized jobbers and midcarders winning the WWE title (Jinder, Miz, Big E, Kofi, etc.) so the argument that "CAWdy's too midcard to hold the belt" goes out the window
You can't have a cheating top heel hold the top belt long enough to beat Bruno's record, that's way too fucking long by modern standards and it will cripple the company
