He'd rather have a more memorable debut then to push metrics for one show a little bit. It sort of makes sense. A more memorable moment is more valuable than 1000 tickets long term.

I don't think this wink wink nudge nudge pseudo-surprise thing is making her debut any more memorable than a bigger, hotter crowd would've. It doesn't feel like Punk did, there was a palpable buzz and a small element of uncertainty, even if we all knew he was gonna be there, just because he hadn't been in wrestling in years. Mone is just coming off of an injury and everybody knows she's gonna be there and it just doesn't feel as unique. It'd feel more special if it was being treated as something really huge.

For an embittered smark like me, it's "okay, Mone's showing up, but we're pretending it's a surprise, cool.", but I also think for the super casuals it might not've penetrated that she's showing up because they haven't announced her. It's the worst of both worlds. Just announce her and hype it up.

but matches aside.. promo / character work was on brand and was perfect for the edge factor that gels with them. in wwe punk the character feels like a parody of aew punk.. even the og punk from back in the day feels like a parody.

Announcing Sasha Banks or Seth Rollins before a show may give it a boost, although probably a small one. Announcing Mercedes Mone or Tyler Black means jackshit, the people that recognise those names would watch regardless.

That's the point. If AEW announces an appearence of Roman Reigns, it won't attract new viewers but it will at least grab a few WWE fans. If it announces him under a literally who name, not even WWE fans will tune in.
