WBD is cancelling AEW because Comcast/NBC brought Smackdown back to Cable. That's the short answer. If WWE didn't have a show on cable, then AEW could argue THEY will can convince WWE fans to keep their cable package instead of cancelling. This is no longer the case and AEW's leverage is gone. WBD, a failing company that is down over 40% in the last year -- well above and beyond most companies who were affected by Hollywood strikes -- cannot afford to pay Tony Khan what he needs to break even, or even close.
The best case scenario here is, ironically, AEW signing a massive contract with another channel.
