Why do smarks worship Kurt so much? He had his chance as top guy with TNA, they never did a buy over 100k and never drew a crowd above 5000. He’s less of a star than anyone in AEW.

1. Because Meltzer has become more generous with the 5* rating than before ever since the Kenny/Okada matches broke the scale (the Misawa/Kawada 6 match was only given in retrospect). It used to be that 5* was the absolute maximum Dave would give.

2. Because Kurt, as much as I love him, wrestled the slop weak style of WWE for the majority of his career. That's not the kind of style that can produce great wrestling matches. To his credit, he did the best with it as he could.

The funny thing is that Dave massively overrated Kurt Angle too, it's just that he hadn't completely lost his shit yet so he wasn't tossing around 5 stars at everything. He was calling Angle the new Ric Flair when Angle had been wrestling for two years. But obviously he's far better and had far better matches than Jon Moxley, who is just terrible.

Kurt Angle is never mentioned as one of the best promos in the business, he's never on anyone's Mt Rushmore, no one fantasy books him in matches with modern day talent. It's extremely clear Kurt Angle is nowhere close to being an elite level talent, he's just a bludgeon to use when you're made about a match getting too many stars or remembering bad WWE booking.
