The kiwi farms guy bought it and then, allegedly, stole the q tripcode and used it to try become a politician. So on and so on. Pretty sure 8 chan was shut down and they made another one called 8 kun. Think of it like the AEW to 4chan's WWE; a weird imitation based off of one mark calling the original bad but then making a worse copy that never got over outside of some deranged cultist fanboys.
