He seems like he always wants to be shown as the guy doing the right thing, even when he's shown to he a fucking moron. I am convinced at this point that Mick did some truly awful shit when he was younger and this is his attempts to try and seek penance for it. No one in the world is as "safe nice guy" as Mick is without having some pretty deep skeletons in the closet.
