Watch season 1 and intial S2 before the Power Transfer and it becomes beyond evident that kids gravitated towards Tommy because he was mysterious. Jason historically is the most Michaels of every red ranger/leader in franchise history. He never fucked up for the planet, Angel Grove or his team once. Best leader objectively. In canon if he would've stuck around for the entirety of MMPR Rita and Zedd would've been destroyed. We all love Tommy because cool points but he habitually fucked up and Jason was frequently bailing him out or cleaning up his messes. Failed in MMPR and also got the MMPR powers+the Thunderzords destroyed under his leadership. If Tommy was any more Jannetty he'd be fucking TJ from Turbo. The one time they legit went head to head for all the marbles in MMPR season 1 Jason goes over Tommy so I mean if that's not proving who was Michaels at PR's peak popularity idk what is.

This. Tommy wound up becoming the poster boy and is cool af but if we look at the x's and o's he's Jannety'd his whole career. Also needed like 7 different powers plus the Master Morpher shit to stay over and all Jason has ever needed was his being Michaels and being MMPR Red. Zeo Gold was a sick bonus though.

The rangers asked for a pay increase since they were getting like $100 an episode. Half of them got fired, Tommy got a raise. The blue BITCH backed down and took a pay cut.

You say that but factually Tommy becoming the white ranger and "replacing" Jason as the leader as the original MMPR Red, Black and Yellow left the show over pay disputes was the beginning of the downslide of Power Ranger's drop in popularity. The Power Rangers was never more over than when it was causing miles of road blockages to Universal Studios and it was the original 5 plus Tommy as Green. It wasn't an overnight thing but by the time Zeo came around (which imo was still good) Power Rangers was for sure less hot and had cooled down from MMPR levels of being over. There's a reason that the first MMPR movie felt like an actual Hollywood live action and the Turbo movie was like direct to VHS.

I think it would be more appropriate to say that Tommy was the Haitch to Jason's Michaels because Jannetty got a clue in the end while this dude kept getting pushed and pushed at the expense of everyone else and kept getting all the upgrades and zords and then became the father figure for Tommymarks on Dino Thunder.

All this tells me is that Tommy wasn't just Janetty but was Hunter Hearst Helmsley too. In bed with Haim Saban and completely happy to take whatever crumbs trickled down to him as long as Haim kept pushing him as his champion/top guy. At best he's the Corporate Champion. Jason was over organically even after years of absence. Tommy was pushed to the moon post-Power Transfer.
