They were great without this gimmick. It was unnecessary to make them even more believable. We can see how big they are. We didn't need the hammers.

The only weapons that work in wrestling are ones that look believably painful but not deadly either. So if you want to wallop on a guy with a Singapore cane, then by all means, but a sledgehammer? You would squash a guy's head like a grape? A sword? Are you going to cut someone in half?

I still preferred a random anon’s idea of calling them hammer hobos and they would have dressed exactly the same as before but they’d have hammer and would vandalize the ring until cops would show up.
