This. I think Punk knew very early on that he was going back to the WWE. There was that report soon after Brawl Out that he was backstage at a Raw “visiting” but that should have been a giant red flag that he was trying to set things up/mend bridges so he could jump back over. You know what the real irony is? AEW is more WCW lite than we realize. Egos and people being butthurt robbed the fans of The Elite vs CMFTR which would have been the biggest feud/program in company history/absolute dimes. It could’ve really launched AEW to the next level. To a much smaller but similar degree it sort of reminds me of Staarcade 97. They had big business and a truckload of dimes at their fingertips and egos/bad attitudes ruined it. AEW was smart enough not to put all their eggs in the Kenny basket for too long as well because look at how broken down he's been since his big initial title run. He hasn't been fully healthy for any significant period of time. His peak years were in Japan. I think Kenny could’ve easily had the kind of WWE run that AJ Styles has. At this point I agree he’s not the guy that can be the babyface you pin years of your future on. He’s 40 and broken down to boot. But Kenny Omega at 70% of his max is still one of the best workers out there. The WWE would’ve given him at least one world title run I think before they let him be a Rollins or Styles.

Theoretically? Yes. I'm 100% on board with you. But the same point about the Roman gridlock at the top of the card would still be the case. Look at Drew. When Roman was away he was THE guy for them. I get some aren't a fan but he did a damn good job during a really hard time for things. Then Roman comes back and immediately he's pushed down significantly. They had to make a whole new belt just to give Rollins something to be content with. The timing just wouldn't have been there for him to come in and do anything significant considering their other plans
