The shoot masochism was like performance art and no one since has come close to Mick in that way. He didn’t gimmick any of it. It was like Funk vs Sabu in the barbed wire match, you can tell people are legit uncomfortable with the show and kind of want it to stop before someone is gravely hurt. Wrestlers have shoot died in the ring, death matches have long jumped the shark, I don’t think you’ll ever see hardcore like the 90s again. Guys like Funk and Foley were all time great workers who just happened to do death match stuff, the only people still trying are terrible workers relegated to death matches.
