dave needs to realize a lot of the dog shit territory wrestling that placed in "match of the year" polls was NEVER good. the audience voting for these things was incredibly small AND the wrestling that was available to them kept their standards in check. over the last 10-20 years, the internet has made wrestling from the entire world available instantly to anyone who wants to see it.

tldr: japanese promotions have always been vastly superior. the amount of hardcore fans who realize that has only steadily increased. american shit has always looked bad in comparison.

the basics have been lost. Guys don't even try to make it look like it's not choreographed. people shit on Hogan for not having moves. I watched a match between him and Lesnar. They were telling a story and the match wouldn't have been improved if Hogan did all the kicks and flips guys do now. With simple stuff, they got the story over. more moves isn't better and it doesn't mean they have a better grasp of basic storytelling in the ring.

I don't understand the line of thinking. The most fundamentally solid people in AEW are the veterans or people brought up under trainers with more territory era mindsets. Daniel Garcia is as bland as a saltine cracker, but his lack of athleticism forces him into a slower grounded wrestling style based around working limbs which ultimately produces the same level of match quality as the guys who do flips yet at a fraction of the risk and with much less botching. The level of athleticism has nothing to do with quality.

This is why wrestling is fucked now. Everyone is so fixated on how many start is dimwit will give it instead of enjoying the moment. I enjoyed both Steamboat-Savage and Hogan-Andre, but they were different types of matches. It seems no one wants to live in the moment and enjoy a match. Fans these days just put expectations on a match, wondering how many stars it can garner, instead of just enjoying to for what it is and how much the crowd enjoys it and feeding off that vibe.

Wrestling in 1984 was light years ahead of modern wrestling. That's why it was a hundred times more popular and why wrestlers like Hogan and Andre were able to achieve true mega star status. A shitter like Ospreay doesn't know the first thing about pro wrestling. He doesn't understand any of the fundamental basics. Which is why he can't draw and will never be any kind of star. The problem with Meltzer is that he loves bad wrestling and bad wrestlers. His perception is completely inverted to where he thinks bad = good.

Yeah. He will say his ratings are just recommendations and then a minute later explain that someone is good because "they have 5 star matches". That's not an intrinsic quality, Dave, it's something you made up.
It's the same with his commentary on dangerous spots. He will say that guys need to slow down and then 30nseconds later he'll talk about how amazing a wrestler is because they do dangerous moves and literally lost out all of the dangerous moves they do to explain why they are good.
