Oldhead here. Why are gimick wrestlers so frowned upon nowadays, isn't that what help make us love wrestling in the first place? I like flippy acrobatics too but yall got to stop no selling everything

Culture changes, and audiences prefer more "real" wrestlers these days. The only gimmick wrestler who got far in Bray Wyatt was shit all over whenever they did something with him

I think as long as it isn't some anachronistic thing like viking raiders there's nothing wrong with a heavy gimmick though. It can be pretty funny. Needs the right environment though, and WWE is trying to be built more like a legit sport now and less like a cartoon (which is to say I'mnot saying one is better or worse, it's just what it has become)

Most of that is inflation combined with grifting TV stations for overvalued products nobody watches. AEW was like 100 million to start entirely from scratch and pulls in like 2/3rds of WWEs ratings while WWE gets over a billion for what it does now? Thats some serious diminishing returns there

90's were when that hit its peak because they were just throwing shit on the walls hoping something would stick. Sometimes it would (undie, kane, goldust) 98% of the time it would be trash

after all of that I still think the awfulness of those years + the attitude era being partly focused around being "real" with the audience has permanently soured gimmicks. Now it's mostly either ironic gimmicks that have to wink wink nudge every few seconds or "I'm a good wrestler" types

People loved Undertaker and took to him instantly even over Hulk Hogan
People loved Bray in all his incarnations and cheered for him constantly

The big difference was Vince got behind Undertaker and made him an unstoppable killing machine while Bray popularity was just a way to hype up him losing to shitters like Ramen Orton or Taker himself.

Remember Pirate Paul Birchull swining out to cheers because people loved how over the top audacious he was doing a Johnny Depp impression? Remember when Vince didnt get why he was an evil 80s gimmick pirate jobber?

Gimmicks didnt go away Vince just didnt allow them to be interesting for 30 fucking years
