I see a lot of people here compare AEW to late stage WCW. What was it actually like watching it in the moment? Did people think WCW was going to go under, and is it true that a lot of fans quit watching wrestling entirely once WCW folded?

Towards the end it was just the guys with power making the decisions, was a clusterfuck, good wrestlers were getting pushed to the WWE. Eric Bischoff made a rant about how awesome wrestling was and they have the best guys yadda yadda and like less than a month later Nitro started with this video

The wrestling fad was already on its way out. It's not that these were diehard WCW fans that refused to watch WWF. They were just casual fans that watched "wrasslin" and didn't really give a shit.

WCW only went out of business because of the AOL merger. The narrative that they went out of business because the product was bad (which it was) is completely false. If having a bad product was enough to drive a wrestling promotion out of business then WWE would have shut down 15 years ago.

Watching WCW appear on raw was one of the most surreal experiences of my life, I had to change the channel to nitro just to make sure I wasn't hallucinating.

Not a good comparison. Late WCW was actually entertaining, admittedly all the wrong reasons but still fun. The Steiner promos for example were stuff of legend. The biggest Issue was the in ring product. Matches were nonsensical and anyone with any actual talent wasn't given time to show it off.

AEW on the other hand is kind of in the doldrums for the opposite reason. Yes the wrestling is fine but it has no storylines and it all just falls flat. WCW at least TRIED to tell stories even if they were either stupid or went nowhere.AEW might as well be a weekly indie, there's no cohesion, no struture and no real long term booking.

There were storylines and actual feuds even in WCW 2000 even though they were poorly produced and weren't as good as they were before often at times, whereas in AEW there's literally none. It's a dumb comparison regardless. In 2000, I used to watch 1 hour of Nitro every Monday before RAW came on, which is my favorite time as a fan. No one ever anticipated that WCW would go under a year later. Everything seemed normal until it happened which was genuinely shocking.

Switching the channel back and forth, and seeing Vince-Shane on two networks was one of the craziest things in not only wrestling history, but television history as a whole. You'll never see anything like it again.

Nobody expected WCW to go under because there was no equivalent to 'WCW goes under!' before WCW went under. But now WCW went under, it's easier to say TNA, AEW, whatever the fuck, is gonna go under like WCW. See what I'm saying? WCW set the precedent of a promotion being big and all over TV, but still flopping. That's why it's the example or failure. That's why WWE got so cocky.
