I think it would have benefited the company more in the long run to have "mysteriously" long record and have Undertaker's name as a constant when talking about someone approaching anything close to his run. Of course, it literally takes 2 decades to even get close to it, who is gonna have that chance even?
Or one way would have been to put some other resident spooky man like Bray over so there'd be some mysticism involved with having a undefeated WM streak and you having to be a halloween mask wearing cretin to be able to defeat the other cretin..
It would have benefited the company more than the momentary shock and this kind of "was it the right call?" after the fact speculating we doing right now. Sure that's one way to keep it relevant, maybe even more effective but I don't like it. Brock being the beast that he is he was certainly a great choice for it but oh well...
