WM13 was the lowest drawing PPV of all time. Austin got hot late 97 and the Tyson thing gave him exposure.

Also WCW was the company that went mainstream first and drew everyone into wrestling that later converted to WWF

He's right on that, but the match did help solidify Austin as a legitimate tough guy who would rather die than admit defeat. I think it helped Austin a whole lot and it even helped bring even more fire to Austin and Bret and even made the feud evolve into an international rivalry between the US and Canada.

It's easy to forget, or not even know, but Stone Cold wasn't really getting pops in 1996 or even early 1997. The 3:16 promo had a very lowkey pop. It honestly wasn't until after the Bret match that Austin's pops started getting noticeably louder overnight. They weren't 1998 level yet, but there was a definite difference.

This is partly true. Austin was still getting no reaction for months after the 3:16 promo, but by November with the Pillman stuff and his promos about Bret he was over. It didn't take until WM. Most over guys for 96 were

2. Bret
3. Ahmed
4. Austin for the last 2 months

I never said he wasn't over, but his pops were noticeably quiet compared to what you'd expect him to get, and compared to his contemporaries at the time. Sorry, but Austin was not getting consistently bigger pops than Taker or HBK even in the last two months of 1996, though I will give you that his pops were getting louder. I stand by the fact that WM was the biggest turning point in pop loudness up to that point and was a clear game changer.

Yes the match made it clear to the crowds that Austin was the guy to root for, but with time that would have eventually happened anyway
All the match really did (besides being technically great as a wrestling match in itself) was make it officially okay and even expected for WWE fans to cheer the supposed 'bad guys' and boo the supposed 'good guys'. I thought everyone knew that
Austin's 'heel' promos and rants were insanely good back in 1996 and early 1997. No way could fans not eventually fully be behind that guy

I've been rewatching all of WWF 96 over the past few months. He wasn't getting the pops he'd get later in his career, but those are pops that only Hogan and The Rock could approach so its not really a fair comparison. Its also hard to gauge pops because Raw was still doing the stupid month long TV tapings of Raw, so you can't see someone organically get over. For example before the Buried Alive PPV, Austin gets no reaction on any Raw leading up to it, but he's pretty over on the PPV itself. You have to remember that the Raw you're watching right before the PPV in October was taped at the start of fucking September. I actually forgot about Taker because everything he does bores me and I skip over all of it, but he was top 3 for pops.

Without question. But the fact of the matter is Austin was not starting to get the pops or reactions he deserved until after WM13. It's just a clear delineation point that shouldn't be minimized, though it doesn't need to be blown out of proportion either.

No cheers, no boos, there's hardly any noticeable change in the crowd noise
Shit sounds like someone edited it after the fact, because everyone's so used to hearing a huge pop after that glass breaks

I remember feeling this way about the 3:16 promo. Yeah it's the most famous promo of all time and eventually had an insane effect, but when I watched it back for the first time, I was expecting a massive pop after "Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass!"

The crowd was basically silent. I thought it was edited or something was wrong with my speakers. I think most of the pop was because he said "ass", kek.

That was more a cause of them booking a 60k seat arena thinking HBK winning the title in his hometown would be a massive draw, and then needing to hand out 35k tickets to people who had no idea who anyone was just to not make it look like an AEW show.

I was watching though much of 98 Raws recently and even after WM 14 he wasnt getting massive pops, it wasnt till around mid to late 98 that he was getting the true "Austin pop".

Austin was already hot by then. It was obvious he was the next guy.

I think Mania 13 was a starting point, but I think the USA vs Canada stuff is what made him hot. By Canadian Stampede, he's getting booed against Bret but people can't help but cheer for him at certain points throughout the match.

WWF was still second place by a noticeable margin for most of this time period. No one was getting big pops. Go look up some Sid entrances around 96, thats far and away as hot as the crowd got. If your first exposure was the attitude era, everyone is going to seem like they're not over, because a Road Dogg entrance on Raw during that time period got a bigger pop than 99% of what you'll get from 94-96
