Dave Meltzer on AEW deciding to show CM Punk/Jack Perry backstage fight footage

No.14144793 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Dave is asked what his thoughts are now that he's had 24 hours to think about it. Dave says that he is reluctant to say too much until he sees how it is presented but his gut instinct is negative on it.

He says: "I think it opened up a wound in AEW that is still, you know, it was closing and is now re-opened"

Bryan Alvarez asks "What is the business positive of this? Is the big question". Dave dismisses the idea of a TV ratings angle on it either way. He says if it does a big quarter or a big show number it means nothing and if it does no number at all it doesn't mean anything because TV ratings are a long-term thing.

He says some people have been positive about it to him if AEW can show that CM Punk lied about it. But he says it is a different society now than it was 20 years ago and people pick who they like and CM Punk has momentum now and that won't make AEW the babyface.

He again says he is trying to hold judgement until he see it but he likens it to Vince trying to babyface himself after Montreal, he says that was a terrible idea at the time but Mr. McMahon came out of it. He doesn't see the same long-term benefit coming out of this one. His "gut is not the best on this one".

Dave says it is going to be a very interesting period for AEW. He says every week he looks at the ticket advances and says "he looks for that ray of hope because that's where you're going to see it first". He says Dynasty and Double or Nothing will be OK when all said and done. But says "it was the weakest first-week for a Vegas PPV that they've ever done, so no sign of the turnaround just yet even though a lot of good signings, a lot of good wrestling". He says a lot of that is due to how strong WWE is right now.
