He had appeal as the next CM Punk when he arrived in FCW, their NXT at the time, so much so that CM Punk put him over as the first Dean Ambrose instead of the next CM Punk, basically a indie guy who was good on the mic. They put him in a team with Seth and Roman as the main talker of the group, he would facilitate most of the backstage boiler room promos they'd do. Over time, his limitations in the ring versus the other two became apparent, and the others found their presence in the group, and then it broke apart. He was still the best promo and that helped him stay in the main event scene, while Seth became the main heel with the authority and Roman became the main babyface. Roman never could find his character as a babyface and ultimately soured on the fans, Seth was never that charismatic as a character face or heel so he got stuck in a holding pattern for a long time, and Dean was discovered by Vince to be a comedy character and got relegated to that, much to his disgust, and eventually left around the time he got a syringe up his asshole by Vince. AEW was brand new and Cody got him to sign up immediately after.
