Korakuen Hall, a spiritual home of Japanese wrestling, and the venue for Stardom's big events houses 2k give or take. Their biggest PPV, 2023's All Star Grand Queendom had an attendance of 5.5k. It's night and day.
Even in the 90s when joshi was white hot, attendance was 30-40k.

The biggest Japanese wrestling company is NJPW and they are about as big as Ring of Honor. And I'm not talking about peak ROH like when they had Punk, Joe, Homicide, Zayn, Owens, Strong, Danielson, Hero... I'm talking about modern ROH. Zombie ROH.

You've seen how small AEW shows are right? Well NJPW is smaller.

WWE is the only pro wrestling company that can do stadiums.

AEW did Wembley. But Wembley is STARVED for wrestling. AEW couldn't do any US arenas.

It's not just a Japanese thing, but a global trend. Wrestling in the 80s/90s in Japan, just like in the US was at its absolute zenith. At the turn of the millennium, things went to shit.
On the men's side of things, a mass exodus of talent in the main fed led to the wrestling scene splintering off. On the women's side (which, unlike the US at the time, legitimately drew) began to reap the consequences of having your talent take up mandatory retirement at 26.
New Japan put Japanese wrestling back on the map, but it was never as big as the olden days
