The whole SummerSlam build was crazy, the idea was Chyna vs Austin for the title until like a week out. They had a convoluted RAW 6 days before the show revolving around who'd be number 1 contender. Chyna beat Triple H, Mankind beat Chyna, Mankind and Triple H ended in a double pin. The post SS beatdown of Austin was meant for time off to see if he could get right without surgery. Dude tried his damnedest and rode it until the wheels fell off.

There was a belief he was done.

Yep. It's why I'll always be an Austin mark. He could have called it a career in 99, and he himself wasn't confident in an inring return into 2000. 2001 was imo his strongest "workrate" year and that's coming off of neck surgery.

Austin's title reign sucked, but it didn't kill the business. The botched Invasion/Merger story line killed the business. They just happened to occur at the same time.

Do I have to be the guy to remind everyone that Austin was supposed to drop the WWF title to Rock at WM2000 and THEN leave to get his neck surgery while Rock carried the company in his absence. Instead Austin sees how over Rock has gotten, feels threatened that Rock would get even bigger and be top guy OVER him at that time by putting him over and elects to get his surgery early before WM 2000 which is why the main event that year was an entire rushed clusterfuck and had to be thrown together last minute. But of course Austin was well enough to do his run in at Backlash soon after since Rock was pinning HHH and only with his help of course.

We didn’t know what “killed the business” meant until PG. Wrestling as a whole cooled off starting with the Austin heel turn but it was still good and popular. Just not as much as at its peak. Austin’s heel turn was one reason but there was no singular reason for the slow down. It was basket of several things.
