Wrestling used to be where outlaw guys went to legitimise their revenue streams.
They did so by working hard and fighting. Wrestling worked back then on the illusion of a real fight using grappling techniques and throws instead of strikes. Emphasis on real fight. Hard emphasis on fight.
That's why most wrestlers were physically intimidating and huge. Some of them were clever, others had retard strength, Vader had both. Hogan was booked to have both and Shawn was still muscly but only physically big compared to today's talent.
Today the only people who get into wrestling's big leagues are well-adjusted college educated footballers and basketball players who are happy to do acrobatic sequences.
The matches don't look like a real fight, thus the suspension of disbelief collapses.
You can't for one moment think that Cody's actually fighting Roman. He politely worked a match with his slightly dishonourable opponent.
And yes Cody's got more muscle than me, he's working hard, it takes a lot of effort to get to the top of the business today and I'm not discounting that.
Put him next to Austin and tell me that between the two Cody's more of a wrestler than Austin.
The best way to fix this problem is to re-establish that it's supposed to be a real fight.
Real fights have an organic look and overtly flexible rhythm.
You can put a metronome to WWE and AEW matches. Not to WWF matches.
