You don't need to know that Gacy thought he'd conquer the world if he won the title from Bronn and became bat shit insane after his cult like faction broke up, and now he's just fighting guys to get hurt, while one member of that faction is now the GM of the show because he weaseled into the job by helping Shawn.
You don't need to know that Scrypts entered NXT as a hacker speedster flippy but turned his back to one of the current tag champs to reconnect with his hood roots to join a gang.
That's what makes it fun, because it is very unhinged if you down too deep into what it was compared to the current situation. They got all sorts of well defined and often stereotypical gimmicks that work because they are so cartoonish.
