A chat room is a different beast from a public forum. If you think ICQ/MSN/IRC is the same as SomethingAwfull/Reddit or think both are the same as Instagramm and Twitter, then Im afraid you are on the stupid side of things
A wok and a pan both are used to cook things, sure, but the experience while cooking aswell as the cooking itself is fastly different from another. Same as with these social media, just because they are all grouped under the same overall banner doesnt mean its the same, and it doesnt mean using one automatically erases the need for another.
