I saw a Xwitter thread where someone noticed that George Lucas drew from a wide range of media when creating Star Wars but now all Star Wars media just references...Star Wars.
I feel like wrestling is undergoing a similar problem. In the various golden eras of wrestling, the wrestlers came from a wider range of backgrounds - lots of legitimate athletes, and big tough guys. Now it seems like most wrestlers are undersized guys who are only wrestling fans and wanted to be a wrestler their entire life and nothing else. I feel like Daniel Bryan is the ur-example of this. These guys are ultimately boring, lack charisma and can't connect to anyone but other mega wrestling nerds.
WWE actively seeking out college athletes instead of bingo hall shitters that used to tape trade seems like a step in the right direction to me, but what say you?
