Austin was already over with smarks at this point, but they were far fewer in number. But yes, it was the Bret feud that elevated Austin.

As corny states in his review of the Austin v hart feud, he says that after the booking committee got the ringmaster gimmick off Austin, Vince lost interest in him for most of 97. This gave Austin the chance to get over by himself/with Bret during this period.

And to clarify for the broccoli-haired revisionists: Austin got the Mr McMahon character over, not the other way around.

So no, Bret was not solely responsible for getting Mr McMahon over by any means. It's simply not possible as he was in WCW at the time. Wrestling with shadows did play a massive role in explaining the Mr McMahon authority character, I agree. But Austin was getting over big time by the time that came out (98).

It's hard to recall how small Vince's presence was back at this point when looking back in hindsight. But nothing was really made explicit. There was the Bret doc, the Bret screwed Bret thing. The promo where Austin comes out in a suit and tie was the start of McMahon obsessing over corporate image and the start of the corporate McMahon character, but that was April 98. Corporation first appeared late 98. Stone Cold was far and away the biggest pop of every night by the time he wore the blue suit that April....

Give examples. Austin v Owen piledriver incident was summerslam and up until that Austin was kind of piddling around the upper midcard and dipping a toe in the main events for multiman matches but he was not being pushed up the card. That's because he wasn't an on screen character yet, zoomie. He took himself off commentary because of the backlash. And it wasn't six months either. The interview was in late November, Vince as an on screen character beefing with Austin started with the Tyson pull apart in January.

Austin was getting the most TV time in the company from late 96 on. Cornette is either intentionally lying or mixing up dates. The ringmaster gimmick was dropped within a month and a half of its debut, and Austin was only a midcarder during the summer but they were still putting him over hard despite him getting no reaction even after KotR

Because there was no precedence for such a thing, and even viewing Vince as just another evil heel wrestling character who gets in the ring and has matches would be considered ridiculous at the time (and it still is, if you think about it). People wanted him to get his ass kicked for Montreal for real of course, but that's another story.
