Yes, in wwf wrestlers like scott hall wernt the main event but he wasnt as low as the midcard either. He was upper midcard.

For me the upper midcard means someone who isn't really in the conversation for being 'the guy', but is a reliable hand that can be in the main event for a while, before slipping back down to the midcard.

The thing is the main event in WWE has to appeal to the kids and the casuals, really. You need someone with a particular brand of charisma and a striking image. Often the upper-midcard guys are better workers, well-liked within the company and in internet circles, and appeal to a particular niche - so I get where the OP's "smarks" comment is coming from - but I would say it's a very easily observable phenomenon in pretty much every major wrestling promotion.

Solo right now is still upper midcard but they're building him up. Drew and Punk for that matter are in a really weird spot where they're both obviously main eventers and the biggest names on their show but they're in a personal feud that doesn't include the title, meanwhile the title is on an upper midcarder who's fighting other upper midcarders (despite what nicknames would have you believe, I'd say Jey is in a similar situation as Solo) for it. That's why everyone's saying Priest is just keeping the belt warm for Drew.

aew is a good example of having an overcrowded upper midcard
their roster is stacked with guys who are reliable workers, well liked by the fans, are clearly above the middle of the pack, but just don't have the "it" factor or drawing power needed to carry the company
swerve is still at that level even with the world title, as were hangman and mjf
