"That's Paul Wight" was probably the first glaring "what's [insert name] doing in the impact zone?" thing I recall. I know WCW did it with Hall and Nash but with Giant it was particularly glaring because his name was a huge part of his identity. Nobody had ever heard of Paul Wight. It would be like Undertaker showing up in WCW as Mark Callaway. They had no idea what to call him until they finally settled on Big Show. At one point they were using "Big Nasty" Paul Wight I think. I just remember me and my brother laughing at his shitty name

All of that was unironically his idea. JR talked about how he didn't want to be "giant" because he was sick of the Andre comparison. Big Show wanted his ring name to be "Big Nasty Bastard" but they convinced him it was a terrible idea because they couldn't sell merch with the word bastard on it.

My older brother said it was because they couldn't use Giant because WCW owned it so I always just assumed that was the reason. If they deliberately chose not to use it they are dumb as hell. He was The Giant. That was his whole thing. It was like Undertaker or Kane. He was the biggest guy on the roster and of all of Goldberg's opponents he seemed like the most formidable. He was an actual attraction in WCW and his "Giant" name/gimmick was a huge part of it. He was supposed to be an inhuman freak not some guy named Paul. Nobody on earth had ever heard of Paul Wight, and it's not even a cool-sounding name like Hall or Nash
