There were still people that wanted WCW gone during the 83 weeks when WCW were on top. They couldn't talk the board into it because WCW was fucking printing them money at that point.
Once the AOL merger happened and Ted Turner wasn't the end all be all of what happened with his company the writing was on the wall.
