It's hard to enjoy any mid reign after Roman built a cult of personality so huge that everyone looked irrelevant compared to him. Roman should have lost to Sami when has was white hot, that was the moment that made the most sense, even though I believe Sami would have been just as dimeles as Cody currently is, the title progression wouldn't have felt so bad.

Cody is meh at carrying a story. I like him as a main centerpiece of the show, but there are times when I feel like he’s the old midcard Cody, then I’ll feel he hasn’t fully evolved into a main eventer. There’s a chance we have yet to see the peak of Cody. He just needs a feud that’s personal and not just “I respect you, but I must win.”

Natural storyline progression. I'm an AEW fan & even I saw that the exact right time to drop it was Sami, everything lined up perfectly & it all made more sense than bringing out the fucking dimeless man that is Taker in street clothes to help Cody win for some reason.

They blew it after that point, Cody last year would have been better than winning this year too but not as satisfying of an end as Sami winning would have been.

He's in a holding pattern because they're already set on him feuding with the Rock and that might not happen until next year. Really in a shit spot for now cause of that, I'm sure when they do finally get there it'll at least be interesting.

Babyface reigns are always worse than heel reigns since you don't have someone chasing the belt to root for.
He has no real rivals right now.
The guys he has a kayfabe relationship with are all babyfaces and/or on another brand right now (Orton, Owens, Zayn, Jey Uso).
The obvious patriotic babyface vs foreign heel trope can't be booked since Gunther is on Raw.
So he will just go from one average feud to the next until Summerslam when he's getting cashed in on by whoever won MitB.

Was definitely surprised to see them draft Gunther to RAW, he was the only guy that felt built up enough for Cody to have a real feud with so it seemed like a no-brainer to bring them closer together. Now there's no chance of them doing anything for the foreseeable future.

This is generally true. You had Bruno, Backland and Hogan for long reigns as top babyfaces but it doesn't work for most other babyfaces. Cody/Orton will be kino when they pull the trigger on Orton's turn though.

They can also have a guy cash in and have Cody chase for a few months before winning it back and have a short reign before Rock returns.
