iirc the difference is that the nWo angle was much more planned out in advance, as Scott Hall was "invading" several weeks beforehand. While Austin I believe came up with his 3:16 dig at Jake by himself but then wasn't pushed for several months after (definitely by the end of 1996 in the programme with Bret).

Austin 3:16 was the moment that the WWF realized they had someone they could push. By 1997 Austin was plastered all over every show and it worked. It was more of a lightbulb moment than the moment itself being the huge deal.

The correct take.

The NWO was built on the back of Hogan's moment and it was the NWO that pushed WWE to give us the Attitude Era.

If Austin didn't have 3:16 he would have had another moment. Austin didn't achieve the status he did because of a one off moment but rather because of who he was and what he was doing.

The 3:16 promo did nothing at all for Austin. He spent most of the year in a low midcard feud with Savior Vega and still got no reaction at all after it. It wasn't until the Pillmans got a gun Raw, and Bret feud that Austin got over
