Checks out. Joe always had brown eyes; Roman has blue. When Roman was defeated by Taker he was sent to the underworld. We really needed to keep the Roman character going, so we had Joe step in and play the role. We thought nobody would notice their eyes were different colors.

Also, this was unofficially Lance's tryout to be the Roman Reigns character on the off chance that Joe wanted to pursue other roles. When he didn't want to wear the blue contacts (he has astigmatism) he turned the role down; we ended up dropping that part of the gimmick on Joe's request.
Vince was really set on having blue-eyed Roman.
