was chris benoit's theme a ripoff of a limp bizkit song?

the main riffs of both songs sound strikingly similar, to the point that it sounds like jim johnston heard it and tried to write a royalty-free version of it, which he was known to do with other songs. if true, this would be an indelible black mark on benoit's legacy

No. Those songs have almost nothing in common in terms of composition. They broadly belong to the same genre (nu-metal) and both contain some pinch harmonics, that's it, that's where the similarities end.

The main riff that 'Whatever' is based off of is Benoit's 'Shooter' theme from Jim Johnston. That was a song Our Lady Peace did for WWE. It wasn't just their own music that WWE licensed

This is possible. Johnston would definitely borrow riffs from other songs and rework them into themes that he made. Never heard anything regarding where Benoit's came from but I can definitely hear the similarity in that opening riff. Given that it was around beforehand too doesn't hurt the case

Yeah the first two beats of the 8 beat riff are the same rhythm, but followed by 6 beats of something entirely different. The Benoit theme is a lot more similar, unsurprisingly, to the theme it was based on, his original theme from 2000-2001, which doesn't have the harmonic and sounds nothing like the Limp Bizkit song.

That's not uncommon though. Johnston wouldn't rip off full songs like WCW was doing with some of their instrumentals. He'd take a small part of something and rework it into its own thing. Like for example Gangrel said that big sweeping bwah riff in the Brood's theme was Johnston playing off of Toadies' 'Possum Kingdom.' I think there's some decent validity to the Bizkit/Benoit riffs

You would have a point if there wasn't already a clear origin of the riff which is his earlier instrumental theme, which itself has even less in common with the Limp Bizkit riff. Unless you want to claim they have a patent on the idea of 5 16ths in a row. In which case you could just as easily say he took it from Metallica's "One" and just replaced the triplets with straight 16ths.

That's what I'm referring too. I already mentioned the OLP version worked from that and wasn't their original music >>14728730. Similar to what Finger Eleven did with Kane's for 'Slow Chemical' and plenty of others that saw similar treatments from actual bands around that time. I'm saying the Bizkit song could possibly be where Jim got the riff from for Benoit's original instrumental theme

And as I explained, that's what makes it a stretch. Without the pinch harmonic there is nothing you can call distinct enough to have been copied. All you have is this (pic related) which is just such a mundane and undeveloped idea you can basically say anyone copied anyone at that point. You could just as easily say they copied One by Metallica like I said earlier, just replace the for semiquavers with two triplets.

In fact there might even be more in common there. Listen to the riff at 5:21 and listen to Benoit's original theme after the initial intro. It has the root note in quick succession, followed by the last note which is different (one semitone higher in One, a whole tone lower in Benoit's theme), repeated over and over in the exact same rhythm.

I'm not saying it's a copy of One either, quite the opposite. My point is if you're going to strip it down to as arbitrary a component as "4 semiquavers followed by a quaver" and try to draw comparisons from that, then you're not doing anything meaningful, you can link any song in the world to almost any other song if you're gonna stretch that far.
