Even if you were right, he'd still have a hell of a lot more eyes on him and likely be more over among mainstream wrestling fans than he is now.
His stuff on Collision was phenomenal. That hour long tag match against FTR was up there with my favorite matches of recent memory. Chumping him out as a second-rate MJF was a huge mistake. There's no reason to believe he would have gotten that treatment under the current WWE regime.
He should be doing more than he is. Great in ring worker with mic skills to boot. And it's going to take a lot to dig him out of this hole now that Okada and Ospreay are the fresher NJPW-alumnis with the company.
