Did it occur to you that maybe after the big blowout with Punk, even the locker room had to re-evaluate itself? Phil's a bit more traditional in his attitude of "take it or leave it", with some wiggle room, but with him having an eternal chip on his shoulder and the arrogance of the AEW newbies, it was only a matter of time. He could've worked there, but it was a coin flip on if it all went to shit.
So partner that with Edge, who has been through his own trials and tribulations, almost objectively worse than Punk's because Edge fucked up a lot (and we all saw it), he's probably not one to judge himself too harsh these days and can at least be more laxed. Plus, he's literally best friends with one of the top guys in Christian. With Punk, he was always viewed as the outsider coming in. The hiatius big dog trying to cash in on an easy returning paycheck with a more rabid fanbase and easier pool to conquer. Even though he just wanted something new.
Edge was never on Punk's scale of popularity, so that with recent events AND being cool with AEW talent might make things easier. If there's anyone to lead the company, it should be him. I don't know why it wasn't Christian, Joe, Sting or Danielson, but Edge is basically THE guy to lead.
