In kayfabe, why do the intercontinental and US championships exist? Why would a wrestler want to go for these instead of the world title?

Teams that win conferences and divisions qualify to contend for the main title though. You don't need to win the IC or US title to win the world title. (Although, I think that would be a good change.)

i agree, bodybuilding titles have something similar (mr olympia), where you have to have won other smaller titles like usa and world to even enter. would go a long way to clarify who is top card and who is not

You don't necessarily have to compete in F2/3 to get a car in F1 but many drivers do in order to show they're capable and ready to move up and challenge for the real title.

The most stupid part is that intercontinental champion and world champion are two words for the very same thing.
At least an intergalactic championship would mean that extraterrestrials could come and compete.
I'd prefer a lightweight/middleweight championship instead. Or an intergender championship that both male and female could compete for.

both belts are legacy from the old days of WWF and WCW, usually upper-midcarders to prove how dimes they really are and eventually transition to the upper card

IC and US champs are the designated as "this guy will be constantly defending the belt on tv tapings, while the big belt champ should save it for big shows/ppv"
