Shooting for a second, I think what a lot of people miss is the fact that post-Vince WWE is obviously moving towards being more of a traditional pro-wrestling company instead of pure sports entertainment like it's been in the past. Obviously they're not changing the stuff that works -- stories and strong characters drive interest in matches. But if you look at the talent they're bringing in, there is obviously an interest in people who can work well in the ring and they've shown a willingness to work around poorer speaking skills in wrestlers who have in-ring work that can carry them. This works because there are obviously a good segment of modern fans who like work-rate wrestlers.
Saddling guys with goofy gimmicks that would never get over was a Vince thing. Sometimes he'd strike lightning in a bottle but more often not. Those days seem to be past.
