Actually, the poster above you had a great recommendation. Perdomos are an excellent beginner cigar that still rock after years of smoking.
My first favorite cigar was a Padron. You can find them practically anywhere. They range in price (the higher end ones can go for over $20 in some places but the lower end ones are great too). Can have a darker wrapper but darker wrappers are good.
Another one I liked early on was anything by Arturo Fuente. Hell, those are great still as well.

I smoke a lot of cigars, but these days I'm enjoying Herrera Esteli. They're out of Nicaragua with good medium-to-full cigar with a lot of flavor.

Another one you can't go wrong with is La Flor de las Antilles. It's rolled by My Father. You really can't go wrong with anything by My Father in my experience, although they're known for starting a bit peppery (don't know if that's your thing or not).

Heh, Gurkha. I've had some alright ones but, like you said, they're best gotten through sampler packs. I aged a couple a few years ago that turned out great.
They were selling these right here for $1.36 million usd initially. They explain that as follows:

Also, if you really get into the hobby, consider getting a PerfecDraw. You can get them on Amazon for like $30. There are videos online how to use them - you use them to pull out excess tobacco to make the draw better. Sometimes cigars can be unsmokable if they're too tight.
I've bought two over the years and they both quickly paid for themselves.

Okay, I got you covered. Sobremesa Brulee by Dunbarton Tobacco and Trust. I don't know if you'll pick up notes of vanilla specifically here, but this cigar is on the milder side and is the absolute tits. A little hard to find, but you can probably order it from Neptune Cigar online

That's a toughie, because I don't smoke cigarillos much anymore. Most cigar stores have a good variety of good minis though. One of my favorites has always been the Oliva O cigarillo. Oliva also makes other minis with different wrappers that are also good.

Cigar pro-tip: premium cigars don't keep like cigarettes or gas station cigars. They don't have a lot of the chemicals that are added to those, which are often there to keep the tobacco moist. As a result, they dry out.
If you buy a bunch of cigars, you ideally want to keep them somewhere they can remain moist. Don't waste your money on an expensive humidor. If you just have a small amount of cigars, buy an airtight tupperware container big enough to hold them and throw a Boveda pack in them. You ideally want a relative humidity around 65 - 70 (and, ideally, they should be kept at a temp around 65 - 70 because otherwise you'll throw the humidity off).
If you buy a bunch of boxes, build a coolerdor. You can find instructions online and it's way cheaper than buying some fancy overpriced Spanish cedar box.

Although it's hard to tell, I think Gunther is smoking one of these. Excellent cigar, a little on the pricier end. Davidoff makes some of the best high end mild-to-medium cigars on the market. You get what you pay for.

More advice: part of the fun of visiting Mexico when you're a cigar smoker is getting a nice Cuban.
Don't buy your Cuban cigars from guys on the beach. This is a complete newfag mistake. He's going to sell you a fake Cohiba and it's going to taste like shit. Be wary of most cigar shops selling Cubans as well.
Instead, look for a place called "La Casa Del Habano." There are a few of these in touristy areas of Mexico (and throughout the world). They're licensed Cuban cigar dealers. Also, don't waste your money on Cohibas. They're excellent, of course, but if you're on a budget you can get a great smoke for way cheaper. I recommend Bolivars, personally, which tend to be a fraction of the price.
